Founder – Cecilia Koester wrote, taught and consulted in a functional, practical way. These techniques led her to create the Movement Based Learning program, in which her legacy of centering the child is still active today.

Author – As a result of many years of applied research, Cecilia’s books and manuals, including Brain Gym® for Special Needs Providers and Movement Based Learning for Children of All Abilities, have been translated into Spanish, French, Malay, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Russian, Italian, Croatian, Slovenian and German. They are presently being translated into Italian.

Teacher – A teacher since 1979, Cecilia’s career unfolded to offer specific tools featured in Movement Based Learning to assist people of all abilities to reach their full potential in learning and in life.

Mentor – Cecilia was able to share her passion and materials with integrity and clarity. Many of her mentees are now in turn sharing the Movement Based Learning program with others.

About Cecilia Koester, M.Ed.

In 1979, Cecilia Koester began working with children and adults of all abilities – typically functioning, attention deficit/hyperactive, emotionally/behaviorally challenged, autistic, developmentally delayed, Down Syndrome, stroke impairments and severe handicaps. The remarkable and provocative book I Am the Child: Using Brain Gym® with Children Who Have Special Needs, published in 1998, journaled Koester’s experiences over a two-year period as a teacher in a public school classroom, drawing out the gifts of 11 children who had complex developmental needs. This inspirational book offers the reader insights into the kinds of things that can be done to improve the quality of life for children who have severe physical challenges.

Over her illustrious career years, Cecilia Koester developed a movement-based learning curriculum that addresses children and adults who are differently abled. Starting in 1998, Koester began teaching workshops throughout the United States of America, Canada, Mexico, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, Australia, Slovenia, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Russia, Spain, France, Italy and Scotland. The curriculum she developed specifically teaches adults how to work with any child or adult – resistant, unable to walk or talk, a typically functioning child who is having difficulty focusing or reading or any adult who is challenged with daily life activities.

The uniqueness of this course, Brain Gym® for Special Needs Providers, grows from the methods and techniques that she offered in her workshops. These “new tools” empower and guide the participant into an awareness of how to assist all children and elders in their journey. Perhaps Cecilia’s greatest gift was her ability to show the participant how and where to begin. Cecilia took the work of the Brain Gym® program and blossomed the information into working with children and adults of all abilities through providing a foundation of developmental building blocks.

In January 2006, Cecilia Koester published her second book, Movement Based Learning for Children of All Abilities. The book was reprinted in 2012. This practical book offers the developmental building blocks that Koester has gathered over the years to enhance the skills involved in the areas of comprehension, organization, communicate, physical mobility, and the ability to focus. Bill Hubert, the originator of Bal-A-Vis-X said, “Somehow, by an exquisite synthesis of What Was and What Is and What Might Be, Cecilia creates a new form.” This form is addressed in a clear and easy to implement style in this book.

Cecilia left us in October 2020 but her legacy lives on through the Movement Based Learning program and all who knew her.

“This course is very helpful in giving hands-on exercises to activate the learning process. Teachers are given tools to help optimal learning occur. I’ve learned to be more aware of my own body. I have come to realize the amazing connection between my body and my mind. This course provided a structure for me to achieve greater clarity and experience many insights––things came together. The attention to detail that makes movement-based learning so much more comprehendible will greatly improve the effectiveness of the work I am doing.”

“Cece’s ability to share the way she notices the child’s behavior, demeanor, ability to pay attention to the game being played or the task being done, is magical. She is able to express what she sees so that you can then replicate the assessment in your own sessions with a child. It’s magical.”

“This course is a learning by doing experience. The atmosphere was open and safe––conducive to learning. Movement-based learning uses movement of the body to effect changes in the brain. It is a tool that once learned, is easy to integrate into your work as a Physical Therapist (PT) as well as your home life. It is a great adjunct to all other tools that we use as a PT.”
